Benekinetic

*I am currently still under NDA with Benekinetic, and thus limited to what I share in my portfolio.

Background:

Benekinetic is developing an exercise mobile app for people with Parkinson’s disease. I provided Benekinetic with a more thorough understanding of the user because of my professional experience as a Personal Trainer and involvement in Parkinson’s communities. The main challenges that come with designing for people with Parkinson’s are that tremors can make it difficult to navigate most commonly used apps.

Problem:

Solution:

One of the issues I discovered during the usability study was that there was no indication of the correct starting position the user needed to be in for the app to begin counting reps. I came up with the idea of putting a silhouette of the proper starting position on the screen to show what to do until the user had mimicked the illustration. Using my digital art tablet I created the illustrations. I added the colors (red, yellow, and green) around the figure- a concept that mirrored the same concept that Benekinetic had which was to include those colors on the sides of the user’s camera view. Also, considering the user could be in a room with a dark background I shaded in an opaque white in the middle.

Role:

UX Consultant & UX Researcher

Empathize:

I provided in-depth research on Parkinson’s disease and from that created a user persona and identified pain points. The persona that I created was created from several different people with Parkinson’s that I have had the pleasure of meeting.

UX Research:

Iconducted user research focused on improving the accessibility and usability of a mobile physical therapy app for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. My responsibilities included planning and facilitating moderated usability tests to evaluate users’ ability to navigate the app and ability to perform key functions with the app.
